Al-Shu'ara: 141 - "Thamud denied the messengers."

{Will you be left} It is permissible that this is a denunciation of them being left to remain forever in their bliss, never to be removed from it. It is also permissible that it is a reminder of the blessing in God leaving them to themselves and what they enjoy of gardens and other things, along with security and tranquility.

{in what is here} In that which has been established in this place of bliss. Then He explained it by saying: {in gardens and springs}. This is also a summary followed by a detail.

If you ask: Why did He say {and palm trees} after saying {in gardens}, when the garden includes palm trees first and foremost, just as "livestock" includes camels among the pairs—to the point that they mention "the garden" and intend only palm trees, just as they mention "livestock" and intend only camels? Zuhayr said: "...watering a tall garden."

I say: There are two aspects:

  1. To single out the palm trees by mentioning them separately after they were included in the category of all other trees, to alert [the listener] to their distinction and superiority over them.
  2. That by "gardens" he means other than palm trees, because the wording allows for that, and then he conjoins the palm trees to it.

{Its spathe (tal'uha)} This is what emerges from the palm tree, like the blade of a sword, containing the clusters (shamareekh) of the fruit stalk (qinu). The qinu is the name for what emerges from the trunk, as it is with its stalk and clusters.

{Soft/Delicate (hadeem)} Meaning fine and slender, from their saying: "a slender waist" (kashh hadeem). The spathe of female palm trees has delicacy, while the spathe of male palm trees has coarseness. Likewise, the spathe of the Barnī date is more delicate than the spathe of the Lawn date. Thus, He reminded them of God’s blessing in granting them the best and most beneficial of palm trees, for the females are the producers of dates, and the Barnī is the best and most delicious of dates.

It is also permissible that he means their palm trees attained excellent soil and abundant water, and were free from blights, so they bore much fruit. When the fruit is abundant, it becomes slender (hadeem), and when it is scarce, it becomes magnificent. It is also said: Hadeem means soft and ripe, as if he said: "and palm trees whose fruit has become ripe."

{And you carve} Al-Hasan read it as tanhatūna with a fatha on the ha.

{Exultant (fariheen)} It is also read as fāriheen. Farāha means cleverness and energy. From it: "energetic horses" (khayl farah). It is used metaphorically for complying with a command and carrying out the obedience of the one who commands. Or, the command is made "obeyed" by way of a figurative judgment, while the intended meaning is the commander. From this is their saying: "You have over me an obeyed command," and His saying: {And obey my command} (Ta-Ha: 90).

If you ask: What is the benefit of His saying: {and do not reform}? I say: Its benefit is that their corruption is absolute corruption, containing no element of righteousness, unlike the state of some corruptors which is mixed with some righteousness.
