Al-Shu'ara: (176) "The companions of the thicket denied..."

[Linguistic Note on "Al-Aykah"] It is read as Aṣḥāb al-Aykah with a hamza, and with its softening (takhfīf). The genitive case (al-Aykah) via the genitive construction (iḍāfa) is the correct reading. As for those who read it in the accusative (al-Lykah) and claim that Lykah—on the pattern of laylah—is the name of a town, they have fallen into a misconception caused by the script of the Muṣḥaf. It is written in this Surah and in Surah Ṣād without an alif.

There are items in the Muṣḥaf written contrary to the standard rules of orthography. They were written in these two Surahs according to the phonetic pronunciation, just as grammarians write lān and lawlā in this manner to indicate the pronunciation of the softened letter. It is written in the rest of the Qur’an according to the original rule, even though the story is the same. Furthermore, Lykah as a proper noun is unknown.

It is narrated that the "Companions of the Thicket" (Aṣḥāb al-Aykah) were people of dense trees, and their trees were the Dūm (Theban palm).

[The Question of Lineage] If you ask: "Why was it not said 'Their brother Shu'ayb,' as in the other places?" I reply: They said that Shu'ayb was not from the Companions of the Thicket. In the Hadith: "Shu'ayb, the brother of Madyan, was sent to them and to the Companions of the Thicket."

[181-184] "Give full measure and do not be of those who cause loss. And weigh with the even balance. And do not deprive people of their things and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption. And fear Him who created you and the former generations."
