Tafsir of Ash-Shu`ara' 26:213

It is known that such a thing would not occur [from the Prophet], but He intended to stir him toward an increase in sincerity and piety. There is a subtlety in this for all those who are held accountable, just as He said: "And if he had made up about Us some [false] sayings" (Al-Ḥāqqah: 44).

"And warn your closest kindred" (Al-Shuʿarāʾ: 214): There are two interpretations:

First: That he be commanded to warn his people, starting with the closest, then the next closest, prioritizing their warning over others. As it was narrated of him (peace be upon him) that when he entered Mecca, he said: "Every usury of the Jahiliyyah is placed beneath these two feet of mine, and the first of it I place is the usury of al-ʿAbbās."

Second: That he be commanded not to let the affection and compassion that a relative feels for a relative overcome him, and that he should not show them favoritism in warning and frightening them.

It is narrated that when it was revealed, he ascended al-Ṣafā and called out to the closest, then the next closest, clan by clan, saying: "O Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, O Banū Hāshim, O Banū ʿAbd Manāf, O ʿAbbās, uncle of the Prophet, O Ṣafiyyah, aunt of the Messenger of Allah: I possess no power to benefit you against Allah in anything; ask me of my wealth whatever you wish."

It is also narrated that he gathered the Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib—who were forty men at that time, each of whom would eat a young sheep and drink a large bowl of milk—and they ate and drank until they were satisfied. Then he warned them, saying: "O Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, if I were to tell you that there were horses at the foot of this mountain, would you believe me?" They said, "Yes." He said: "Then I am a warner to you before a severe punishment."

It is also narrated that he said: "O Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, O Banū Hāshim, O Banū ʿAbd Manāf, ransom yourselves from the Fire, for I cannot avail you against Allah in anything." Then he said: "O ʿĀʾishah daughter of Abū Bakr, O Ḥafṣah daughter of ʿUmar, O Fāṭimah daughter of Muḥammad, O Ṣafiyyah aunt of Muḥammad, ransom yourselves from the Fire, for I cannot avail you against it in anything."

"And lower your wing to those who follow you of the believers. And if they disobey you, then say, 'Indeed, I am disassociated from what you are doing.'"
