Tafsir
Verse range: 26:29
[Question]: Was "I will surely imprison you" (la-asjunannaka) not more concise than "I will surely make you one of the imprisoned" (la-ajʿalannaka min al-masjūnīn), while conveying the same meaning?
[Response]: As for being more concise, yes. But as for conveying the same meaning, no.
The meaning of "I will surely make you one of the imprisoned" is: "I will surely make you one of those whose condition you have come to know regarding my prisons."
It was his custom to take whoever he wished to imprison and cast them into a pit that descended deep into the earth—a place of extreme depth where one is isolated, neither seeing nor hearing anything. Thus, it was as if that were more severe than killing, and even more intense.
[Verse 30-31]: "He said, 'Even if I bring you something clear?' He said, 'Then bring it, if you are of the truthful.'"
