Al-Shu'ara: (43) "Moses said to them..."

They swore by the might of Pharaoh, which is among the oaths of the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance). Thus is every oath sworn by other than Allah.

In Islam, it is not valid to swear except by Allah, attached to some of His names or attributes, such as saying: "By Allah," "By the Most Merciful," "By my Lord," "By the Lord of the Throne," "By the might of Allah," "By the power of Allah," "By the majesty of Allah," or "By the greatness of Allah."

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

"Do not swear by your fathers, nor by your mothers, nor by the idols. Do not swear except by Allah, and do not swear by Allah unless you are truthful."

People have introduced into this matter, within their Islam, a Jahiliyyah that has caused the first Jahiliyyah to be forgotten. This is because if one of them were to swear by all the names and attributes of Allah regarding a matter, it would not be accepted from him, nor would it be considered, until he swears by the head of his ruler. If he swears by him, that is, in their view, the most solemn of oaths, beyond which no swearer can go.

{ Then Moses cast his staff, and behold, it swallowed up what they falsely fabricated. Then the sorcerers fell down in prostration. They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds, the Lord of Moses and Aaron." }
