Tafsir of An-Naml 27:27

{We shall see whether you have told the truth...}

{We shall see}: From al-nazar (looking), which means contemplation and examination. He meant: "Have you told the truth or have you lied?"

However, {or whether you are among the liars} is more eloquent. This is because if one is known to be among the ranks of the liars, he is inevitably a liar. And if he is a liar, he is suspected of lying in what he has reported, and thus he is not to be trusted.

{Turn away from them}: Withdraw from them to a nearby place where you can hide, so that what they say may be within your hearing.

{And they will return}: Derived from the Almighty’s saying: {They will return speech to one another} (Saba': 31). It is said: He entered upon her through a niche, threw the letter to her, and hid in the niche.

If you ask: Why did he say, {Then throw it to them}, using the plural form?

I reply: Because he said, {I found her and her people prostrating to the sun}. So he said, "Throw it to those whose religion this is," out of concern for the matter of religion and preoccupation with it over anything else. The address in the letter was constructed in the plural form for that reason.

{She said, "O eminent ones, indeed, to me has been delivered a noble letter. Indeed, it is from Solomon, and indeed, it is: 'In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Be not haughty with me but come to me in submission [as Muslims].'"}
