Tafsir
Verse range: 27:56
"And the answer of his people was only that they said..."
Al-A‘mash recited: “jawābu qawmihi” (the answer of his people) in the nominative case (raf‘). The well-known reading is better.
"{...they are a people who keep themselves pure.}" They keep themselves away from all filth. Thus, they denounce this filthy act, and their denunciation angers us.
It is narrated from Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) that this is mockery.
"{...We destined her...}" We decreed that she would be...
"{...among those who remain behind.}" Similar to His saying: “We decreed that she would be among those who remain behind” (Al-Hijr: 60). Thus, the decree applies to the state of "remaining behind" in meaning.
"{Say, 'Praise to Allah, and peace upon His servants whom He has chosen. Is Allah better, or what they associate with Him?'}"
