Surah Al-Qasas 28:10

ﲊ ﲋ ﲌ ﲍ ﲎ ﲏ ﲐ ﲑ ﲒ ﲓ ﲔ ﲕ ﲖ ﲗ ﲘ ﲙ ﲚ ﲛ

And the heart of Moses' mother became empty [of all else]. She was about to disclose [the matter concerning] him had We not bound fast her heart that she would be of the believers.

{فارغا} (Empty) Void of reason. The meaning is: when she heard of his falling into the hands of Pharaoh, her mind flew away due to the excessive panic and shock that overwhelmed her. This is similar to the Almighty’s saying: {And their hearts were *hawa’* (void/air)} (Ibrahim: 43), meaning hollow, containing no reason. From this is the verse of Hassan: *“Convey to Abu Sufyan from me, that you are hollow, cowardly, and void.”*

This is because hearts are the centers of reason. Do you not see His saying: {So they would have hearts by which to reason}? This is also indicated by the reading of those who read it as farghan (empty). It was also read as qar’an, meaning vacant, from the saying: "I seek refuge in God from an empty vessel and a desolate courtyard." And farghan, from the saying: "Their blood is fargh (wasted) among them," meaning nullified. It means her heart became void and vanished, and she remained without a heart due to the intensity of what befell her.

{لتبدي به} (To disclose it) To reveal it. The pronoun refers to Moses, and what is intended is his affair and his story, and that he is her son.

{لولا أن ربطنا على قلبها} (Had We not fortified her heart) By inspiring patience, just as one binds something that is slipping away so that it may settle and be at peace.

{لتكون من المؤمنين} (That she might be of the believers) Of those who trust in God’s promise, which is His saying: {We will return him to you}.

Alternative Interpretation: Her heart became empty of worry when she heard that Pharaoh had shown him affection and adopted him. She was on the verge of revealing that he was her son, for she could not control herself out of joy and happiness at what she heard, had We not calmed her heart and quieted the agitation that occurred due to the intensity of joy and delight, so that she might be among the believers who trust in God’s promise, not in Pharaoh’s adoption and affection.

{موسى} (Moses) It was read as *Mu’sa* with a *hamza*, treating the *damma* on the *mim* as if it were part of the *waw*, so it is hamzated just as the *waw* in *wujuh* is hamzated.

{قصيه} (Follow his tracks) Follow his traces and track his news. It was read as *fa-basurat* (with a kasra). It is said: *basurtu bihi ‘an janab* and *‘an janabah*, meaning from a distance. It was also read as *‘an janib* and *‘an janb*. *Al-janb* is the side; it is said: "He sat at his *janb* and his *janib*," meaning she looked at him while turning away, keeping to the side, and acting deceptively, while they did not perceive that she was his sister. Her name was Maryam.


{وحرمنا عليه المراضع من قبل فقالت هل أدلكم على أهل بيت يكفلونه لكم وهم له ناصحون * فرددناه إلى أمه كى تقر عينها ولا تحزن ولتعلم أن وعد الله حق ولاكن أكثرهم لا يعلمون} {And We had prevented him from [accepting] wet nurses before, so she said, "Shall I direct you to a household that will be responsible for him for you while they are to him sincere?" * So We restored him to his mother that she might be content and not grieve and that she would know that the promise of Allah is true. But most of the people do not know.}
