Al-Qasas: (39) "And he and his soldiers acted arrogantly..."

"Acting arrogantly with right" belongs only to Allah Almighty. He is the Mutakabbir (the Proud/Majestic) in truth, meaning the One who has reached the ultimate limit in the majesty of His status. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, in what he narrated from his Lord:

"Pride is My cloak and Greatness is My lower garment; whoever disputes with Me regarding either of them, I will cast him into the Fire."

Every arrogant one besides Him acts arrogantly without right.

"{They will be returned}" (can be read with a damma or fatha on the 'y').

"{So We seized him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea}": This is among the majestic speech through which He indicates the greatness of His status and the pride of His authority. He likens them—out of contempt for them and regarding their numbers as insignificant, even though they were a great multitude and a vast crowd—to pebbles that someone takes in his palm and throws into the sea.

Similar to this is His saying:

  • "{And We placed therein lofty, firm mountains}" (Al-Mursalat: 27).
  • "{And the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow}" (Al-Haqqah: 14).
  • "{And they have not appraised Allah with true appraisal, while the entire earth will be within His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand}" (Az-Zumar: 67).

These are nothing but depictions and representations of His omnipotence, showing that every created thing, no matter how great or magnificent, is insignificant alongside His power.

"{And We made them leaders inviting to the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection they will not be helped. And We caused a curse to follow them in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be among the despised.}"
