Al-Qasas: 43

{Basa'ir (Insights)}: It is in the accusative case (nasb) as a circumstantial qualifier (hal).

  • Al-Basirah: The light of the heart by which one gains insight, just as al-basar (sight) is the light of the eye by which one sees.
  • The meaning: We gave him the Torah as lights for hearts, because they were blind, unable to gain insight or distinguish truth from falsehood.
  • {Wa-irshadan (And as guidance)}: Because they were stumbling in misguidance.
  • {Wa-rahmah (And a mercy)}: Because if they acted upon it, they would attain mercy.
  • {La'allahum yatadhakkarun (That they might be reminded)}: This denotes the intent for them to be reminded. The intent is likened to hope (tarajji), and thus the term for hope is metaphorically applied to it. It is also permissible that it refers to the hope of Moses (peace be upon him) that they would be reminded, as in the Almighty’s saying: "Perhaps he may be reminded" (Ta-Ha: 44).
