Verse range: 28:54
{بما صبروا} By their patience: their patience in believing in the Torah and believing in the Qur’an. Or, their patience in believing in the Qur’an before its revelation and after its revelation. Or, their patience in enduring the harm of the polytheists and the People of the Book. Similar to this is: “He will give you a double portion of His mercy” (Al-Hadid: 28).
{بالحسنة السيئة} By the good deed, [they repel] the evil deed: by obedience, [they repel] the preceding act of disobedience. Or, by forbearance, [they repel] the harm.
{وإذا سمعوا اللغو أعرضوا عنه وقالوا لنا أعمالنا ولكم أعمالكم سلام عليكم لا نبتغي الجاهلين}
And when they hear vain talk, they turn away from it and say, "To us our deeds, and to you your deeds. Peace be upon you; we seek not the ignorant."
