And whatever thing you [people] have been given - it is [only for] the enjoyment of worldly life and its adornment. And what is with Allah is better and more lasting; so will you not use reason?

Al-Qasas: 60

"And whatever you have been given of the things of this world, it is only the enjoyment of worldly life and its adornment."

That is, whatever you have attained of the means of this world, it is nothing but enjoyment and adornment for a few days—which is the duration of this fleeting life.

"And what is with Allah"—meaning His reward—"is better" in itself than that, "and more lasting" because its permanence is eternal and everlasting.

It is recited as ya‘qilūn (they understand) with a yā’, which is more profound in its admonition.

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that Allah created the world and divided its people into three categories: the believer, the hypocrite, and the disbeliever. The believer provides for himself [for the Hereafter], the hypocrite adorns himself, and the disbeliever enjoys himself.

Al-Qasas: 61

"Is he whom We have promised a good promise, which he will meet, like him whom We have provided with the enjoyment of worldly life, then he is, on the Day of Resurrection, among those brought [to punishment]?"
