Surah Al-Qasas 28:63

ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ ﱱ ﱲ ﱳ ﱴ ﱵ ﱶ ﱷ ﱸ ﱹ ﱺ ﱻ ﱼ ﱽ ﱾ ﱿ ﲀ ﲁ

Those upon whom the word will have come into effect will say, "Our Lord, these are the ones we led to error. We led them to error just as we were in error. We declare our disassociation [from them] to You. They did not used to worship us."

Al-Qaṣaṣ: 63

{Those upon whom the word has come true} They are the devils, or the leaders of disbelief and its figureheads. The meaning of "the word has come true upon them" is that its requirement has become binding and established for them, which is His saying: "I will surely fill Hell with jinn and mankind all together" (Hūd: 119; al-Sajdah: 13).

{These} is the subject (mubtadaʾ), and {whom we led astray} is its adjective (ṣifah). The pronoun referring back to the relative pronoun (al-mawṣūl) is omitted. {We led them astray} is the predicate (khabar). The kāf (in ka-mā) is an adjective for an omitted verbal noun (maṣdar). Its estimation is: "We led them astray, so they went astray with a straying like the straying we committed."

They mean: "We did not go astray except by our own choice, not because there were those above us who led us astray by compelling or forcing us. Rather, we invited them to error and made it seem alluring to them, and these [followers] likewise went astray by their own choice. For our leading them astray was nothing but whispering and allurement, not compulsion or force. Thus, there is no difference between our straying and their straying."

Even if our allurement was an invitation for them toward disbelief, it was countered by God’s invitation to them toward faith, through the rational proofs He placed within them, the messengers He sent to them, and the scriptures He revealed to them, filled with promises, threats, exhortations, and warnings. That is sufficient as a deterrent from disbelief and an invitation to faith. This is the meaning of what God recounted regarding Satan: "God promised you the promise of truth, and I promised you, but I betrayed you. I had no authority over you except that I called you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me..." (Ibrāhīm: 22). God Almighty established this meaning first, when He said to Iblīs: "Indeed, My servants—you have no authority over them, except those who follow you of the deviators" (al-Ḥijr: 42).

{We disavow them before You} We disavow them and the disbelief they chose for themselves, out of their own desire for falsehood and hatred for the truth, not because we had the power to coerce them or authority over them.

{It was not Us they were worshipping} They were only worshipping their own whims and obeying their own desires. The two sentences are devoid of conjunctions because they serve to confirm the meaning of the first sentence.


Al-Qaṣaṣ: 64–66

{And it will be said, "Call your partners," and they will call them, but they will not respond to them; and they will see the punishment. If only they had been guided! And the Day He will call them and say, "What answer did you give the messengers?" Then the news will be obscured to them that Day, so they will not ask one another.}
