Al-Qasas: (84) "Whoever comes with a good deed..."
Meaning: They shall not be recompensed [for more than their deeds]. The phrase "those who committed the evil deeds" was placed in the position of the pronoun [i.e., instead of saying "they"] because attributing the commission of evil to them repeatedly serves to emphasize the repulsiveness of their state and increases the hatred of evil in the hearts of the listeners.
"Except what they used to do": Meaning, except for the like of what they used to do. This is part of His immense grace and vast generosity: that He does not recompense an evil deed except with its like, while He recompenses a good deed with ten times its like, and up to seven hundred times. This is the meaning of His saying: "Then he shall have better than it."
(85) "Indeed, He who [ordained] imposed the Qur'an upon you will surely bring you back to a place of return. Say, 'My Lord is most knowing of who brings guidance and who is in clear error.'"
