Tafsir of Al-`Ankabut 29:10

Surah Al-`Ankabut 29:10

ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ ﱱ ﱲ ﱳ ﱴ ﱵ ﱶ ﱷ ﱸ ﱹ ﱺ ﱻ ﱼ ﱽ ﱾ ﱿ ﲀ ﲁ ﲂ ﲃ ﲄ ﲅ ﲆ ﲇ ﲈ ﲉ ﲊ ﲋ ﲌ ﲍ ﲎ

And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah," but when one [of them] is harmed for [the cause of] Allah, they consider the trial of the people as [if it were] the punishment of Allah. But if victory comes from your Lord, they say, "Indeed, We were with you." Is not Allah most knowing of what is within the breasts of all creatures?

Al-Ankabut: (10) "And of the people are some who..."

"And of the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah,' but when they are harmed for the sake of Allah..."

These are people who believed with their tongues. When they were touched by harm from the disbelievers—which is what is meant by "the trial of the people"—that harm became a deterrent for them away from faith, just as the punishment of Allah should be a deterrent for the believers away from disbelief.

When Allah grants victory to the believers and grants them spoils, these hypocrites approach them and say, "Indeed, we were with you," meaning: we were your supporters in your religion, remaining as steadfast upon it as you were, and no one was able to tempt us away from it. Therefore, give us our share of the spoils.

Then, the Exalted informed them that He is All-Knowing of "what is in the breasts of the worlds"—meaning He knows what is in the hearts of all creation, including the hypocrisy that these people conceal in their breasts. This is an unveiling by Him to the believers of what the hypocrites had hidden. Then, He promised the believers and threatened the hypocrites. It is also recited as la-yaqūlanna (with a fatḥa on the lām).

"And those who disbelieve say to those who believe, 'Follow our way, and we will carry your sins.' But they will not carry anything of their sins. Indeed, they are liars. But they will surely carry their own burdens and [other] burdens along with their burdens, and they will surely be questioned on the Day of Resurrection about what they used to invent."
