Tafsir of Al-`Ankabut 29:25

It is recited in the accusative (naṣb) without genitive construction (iḍāfah) and with it, and likewise in the nominative (rafʿ).

The Accusative (naṣb) has two aspects:

1. As a causal explanation (taʿlīl): Meaning, "in order for you to love one another and maintain ties," because of your gathering upon their worship, your agreement upon them, and your harmony—just as people agree upon a school of thought, which becomes the cause of their mutual love and friendship.
2. As a second object: Like His saying: "He has taken his desire as his god" (Al-Furqān: 43). Meaning: You have taken the idols as a cause of affection between you, assuming the omission of the genitive noun. Or, you have taken them as "affection" (mawaddah) between you, meaning "beloved" (mawaddah) between you, like His saying: "And among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him], loving them as they [should] love Allah" (Al-Baqarah: 165).

The Nominative (rafʿ) has two aspects:

1. That it is the predicate (khabar) of anna, assuming mā is a relative pronoun (mawṣūlah).
2. That it is the predicate of an omitted subject. The meaning is: "The idols are an affection between you," meaning: "beloved," or "a cause of affection."

Regarding ʿĀṣim’s recitation: mawaddatu baynikum (with a fatḥah on baynakum with the genitive construction), just as it was recited: "The ties between you have been severed" (Al-Anʿām: 94), where he vocalized it with fatḥah while it is the agent (fāʿil).

Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) recited: "Awthānan innamā mawaddatu baynikum fī al-ḥayāh al-dunyā" (Idols, you only have affection between you in the worldly life). Meaning: You only love one another because of them, or you love them in the worldly life.

"Then on the Day of Resurrection..." Mutual cursing, hatred, and enmity will arise between you. The worshippers will curse one another, and the worshippers and the idols will curse one another, as in His saying: "And they will be to them opponents" (Maryam: 82).

"So Lūṭ believed him, and he said, 'Indeed, I will emigrate to my Lord. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.'"
