Tafsir
Verse range: 29:36-37
{And hope [for the Last Day]} Do that by which you hope for the outcome. The effect (hope) is placed in the position of the cause (the deeds that lead to it).
Alternatively, it is a command to hope, meaning: the condition of faith that justifies such hope is implied, just as a disbeliever is commanded to perform religious duties with the condition [of faith] intended. It is also said that it is derived from al-raja’ in the sense of fear.
{And the earthquake seized them} Al-rajfa is a violent shaking. Al-Dahhak said: It was the cry of Gabriel (peace be upon him), because hearts trembled at it.
{In their home} In their city and their land. Or [it refers to] their houses; the singular is used because it does not cause confusion.
{So they became [in their home] fallen prone} Kneeling upon their knees, dead.
{And [We destroyed] ‘Ad and Thamud, and it has become clear to you from their dwellings. And Satan had made their deeds pleasing to them and averted them from the path, even though they were endowed with insight.}
