Al-Ankabut: 63
"And if you asked them, 'Who...'"
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was commanded to praise Allah because he is among those who affirm what they (the polytheists) affirm. This affirmation benefited him in the Oneness of Allah and the negation of rivals and partners from Him, whereas it was not a futile affirmation like that of the polytheists.
They affirmed that which serves as a proof against them, for they attributed the blessing to Allah while directing worship to the idol.
Then He said: "But most of them do not reason"—they do not understand what they are saying, nor the indication it contains regarding the invalidity of polytheism and the validity of monotheism. Or, they do not understand what you mean by your saying, "Praise be to Allah," and they do not perceive why you praised Allah upon their statement.
"And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew."
