Have they not seen that We made [Makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away all around them? Then in falsehood do they believe, and in the favor of Allah they disbelieve?

Al-Ankabut: 67

"Have they not seen..."

The Arabs surrounding Mecca used to raid one another, launch incursions, and plunder. Yet, the people of Mecca remained secure within it; they were neither raided nor attacked, despite their small numbers and the vast multitude of the Arabs.

God reminded them of this specific favor bestowed upon them and rebuked them for believing in the falsehood they followed. Such an evident, manifest favor—along with other blessings that none but God alone could provide—was met with ingratitude on their part.

"And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against God or denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a residence for the disbelievers?"
