Tafsir of Al Imran 3:112

Surah Al Imran 3:112

ﱵ ﱶ ﱷ ﱸ ﱹ ﱺ ﱻ ﱼ ﱽ ﱾ ﱿ ﲀ ﲁ ﲂ ﲃ ﲄ ﲅ ﲆ ﲇ ﲈ ﲉ ﲊ ﲋ ﲌ ﲍ ﲎ ﲏ ﲐ ﲑ ﲒ ﲓ ﲔ ﲕ ﲖ ﲗ ﲘ ﲙ

They have been put under humiliation [by Allah] wherever they are overtaken, except for a covenant from Allah and a rope from the Muslims. And they have drawn upon themselves anger from Allah and have been put under destitution. That is because they disbelieved in the verses of Allah and killed the prophets without right. That is because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed.

Al-Imran: 112

{Except by a rope from Allah} This is in the accusative case as a circumstantial qualifier (ḥāl), with the implied meaning of "except while holding fast," "clinging," or "clothed" in a rope from Allah. This is an exception from the most general of general states. The meaning is: humiliation has been struck upon them in all states, except in the state of their holding fast to the rope of Allah and the rope of the people—meaning the covenant of Allah and the covenant of the Muslims. That is, they have no honor at all except for this one instance, which is their resorting to the covenant due to their acceptance of the jizya (poll tax).

{And they have incurred wrath from Allah} They have made it incumbent upon themselves.

{And humiliation has been struck upon them} Just as a tent is struck (pitched) over its inhabitants; they are dwelling in humiliation, never departing from it. They are the Jews, upon whom is the curse of Allah and His wrath.

{That is} A reference to what was mentioned regarding the striking of humiliation and poverty, and the incurring of Allah’s wrath. That is, this is happening because of their disbelief in the signs of Allah and their killing of the prophets. Then He said:

{That is because they disobeyed} Meaning, that is happening because of their disobedience to Allah and their transgression of His limits. This is so it may be known that disbelief alone is not the only cause for deserving the wrath of Allah, and that the wrath of Allah is deserved by committing acts of disobedience just as it is deserved by disbelief and the like.

(As in the verse: "Because of their sins they were drowned" [Nūḥ: 25])

{And their taking of usury, while they had been forbidden from it, and their consuming of the wealth of the people unjustly} [An-Nisāʾ: 161].
