Al-Imran: 29

"Say: Whether you hide what is in your breasts or reveal it, Allah knows it. And He knows what is in the heavens and what is in the earth, and Allah is over all things competent."

"Whether you hide what is in your breasts or reveal it" Regarding the alliance with the disbelievers or anything else that does not please Allah.

"Allah knows it" Nothing is hidden from Him. He is the One who:

"Knows what is in the heavens and what is in the earth" Nothing at all is hidden from Him. Therefore, neither your secrets nor your public acts are hidden from Him.

"And Allah is over all things competent" He is capable of punishing you. This is an explanation of His saying: "And Allah warns you of Himself" (Al-Imran: 28).

Because His "Self"—which is His Essence, distinguished from all other essences—is characterized by an essential knowledge that is not restricted to some known things to the exclusion of others; rather, it relates to all known things. And [it is characterized] by an essential power that is not restricted to some objects of power to the exclusion of others; rather, it is capable of all objects of power.

Therefore, it is right that He should be feared and guarded against. No one should dare to commit an ugly deed, nor fall short in a duty, for that is inevitably witnessed by Him, and punishment will surely follow it.

If one of a ruler’s servants knew that the ruler intended to observe his affairs, and had assigned his concern to everything he does and says, and had set eyes upon him and spread spies to investigate his inner matters, he would take caution, be vigilant in his affairs, and avoid everything that might cause suspicion. So, what is the matter with one who knows that the All-Knowing Essence—who knows the secret and what is even more hidden—is watching over him, yet he remains secure?

O Allah, we seek refuge in You from being deluded by Your covering.

"The Day every soul will find what it has done of good present [before it], and what it has done of evil, it will wish that between itself and that [evil] was a great distance. And Allah warns you of Himself, and Allah is Kind to [His] servants."
