Āl ʿImrān: 42–43

"And when the angels said..."

"O Maryam" It is narrated that they spoke to her directly as a miracle for Zakariyā or as a precursor (irhāṣ) to the prophethood of ʿĪsā.

"He has chosen you" Firstly, when He accepted you from your mother, raised you, and singled you out for sublime honor.

"And purified you" From actions deemed repulsive, and from that which the Jews falsely accused you of.

"And has chosen you" Secondly...

"Above the women of the worlds" By granting you ʿĪsā without a father, a privilege not bestowed upon any other woman.

"O Maryam, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow."

She was commanded to pray by mentioning qunūt (devotion/standing) and prostration, as they are among the postures and pillars of prayer. Then it was said to her:

"And bow with those who bow" Meaning: Let your prayer be with the worshippers—that is, in congregation—or join yourself to the ranks of the worshippers, be among them, and be counted with them rather than others.

It is also possible that in her time, there were those who would stand and prostrate in their prayer but not bow, while others did bow; thus, she was commanded to bow with those who bow and not be among those who do not.
