Tafsir
Verse range: 3:8
"Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate..."
"Do not let our hearts deviate" Do not afflict us with trials in which our hearts would deviate.
"After You have guided us" And directed us to Your religion; or, do not withhold Your kindness from us after You have been kind to us.
"Grant us from Yourself mercy" From Your presence, a blessing of success and assistance. It is also recited as la tuzigh qulubuna (do not let our hearts deviate) with both the ta and the ya, and with the qulub (hearts) in the nominative case.
"Gatherer of the people for a Day" Meaning: You will gather them for the reckoning of a Day or the recompense of a Day, as in His saying, the Exalted: "The Day He will assemble you for the Day of Assembly" (al-Taghabun: 9). It is also recited as jami' al-nas (Gatherer of the people) according to the original grammatical form.
"Indeed, Allah does not break His promise" Its meaning is that divinity contradicts the breaking of a promise, just as you would say: "Indeed, the generous one does not disappoint the one who asks him." Al-mi'ad is the promised time. Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, recited lan tughni (will not avail) with a quiescent ya, which is an example of the effort to avoid the heaviness of vowels on soft letters.
"Indeed, those who disbelieve—never will their wealth or their children avail them against Allah at all. And it is they who are fuel for the Fire. [It is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and those before them; they denied Our signs, so Allah seized them for their sins. And Allah is severe in penalty. Say to those who disbelieve, 'You will be overcome and gathered together to Hell, and wretched is the resting place.'"
