Surah Al Imran 3:84

ﱁ ﱂ ﱃ ﱄ ﱅ ﱆ ﱇ ﱈ ﱉ ﱊ ﱋ ﱌ ﱍ ﱎ ﱏ ﱐ ﱑ ﱒ ﱓ ﱔ ﱕ ﱖ ﱗ ﱘ ﱙ ﱚ ﱛ ﱜ ﱝ

Say, "We have believed in Allah and in what was revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Descendants, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus and to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [submitting] to Him."

"Say: We believe in Allah..."

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was commanded to inform [others] of his own faith and the faith of those with him. For this reason, the pronoun in "Say" (Qul) is singular, while in "We believe" (Amanna) it is plural. It is also possible that he was commanded to speak for himself as kings speak, to exalt the status of His Prophet.


If you ask: Why is the verb "sent down" (unzila) in this verse constructed with the preposition of elevation (‘ala - upon), while in previous similar instances it was constructed with the preposition of termination (ila - to)?

I say: Because both meanings are present. Revelation descends from above and terminates at the Messengers. Thus, it comes at one time with one meaning and at another time with the other.

As for those who claim that "upon us" (‘alayna) is used because of the command "Say" (Qul), and "to us" (ilayna) is used because of the command "Say [plural]" (qulu - in Al-Baqarah 136), intending to differentiate between the Messenger and the believers—claiming the Messenger receives revelation by way of elevation while they receive it by way of termination—this is a forced interpretation.

Do you not see His saying: "by what was sent down to you" (Al-Ma'idah) and "We sent down to you the Book" (An-Nisa'), and His saying: "And a party of the People of the Scripture said: 'Believe...'"?


"And we are Muslims to Him"

Meaning: We are monotheists, surrendering our souls to Him, not assigning any partner to Him in our worship.


"And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam"

Meaning: Monotheism and the surrender of one's face to Allah the Exalted.


"never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers."

Meaning: Among those who have fallen into loss absolutely, without restriction, due to its widespread nature. It is also recited as wa-may-yabtaghi (with assimilation).
