Tafsir
Verse range: 30:20
{He created you from dust} Because He created their origin from it.
{Then, behold} The word idha (when/then) here denotes suddenness (mufaja'ah). The implied meaning is: "Then you suddenly became human beings spreading throughout the earth." This is like His saying: {And dispersed from both of them many men and women} (An-Nisa: 1).
{From among yourselves, mates} Because Eve was created from the rib of Adam, peace be upon him, and women after her were created from the loins of men. Alternatively, it means from the same form and species as yourselves, not from a different species. This is because of the familiarity and tranquility that exists between two of the same species, as opposed to the repulsion that exists between two different species.
{And He placed between you} Affection and mercy through the bond of marriage, after there had been no prior acquaintance, meeting, or cause necessitating sympathy, such as kinship or blood relation.
Al-Hasan, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "Affection is a metonymy for intercourse, and mercy is a metonymy for the child," as He said: {And a mercy from Us} (Maryam: 21), and: {A mention of the mercy of your Lord to His servant} (Maryam: 2).
It is said: "He found tranquility in him" (sakana ilayhi) when he inclined toward him, similar to their saying: "He devoted himself to him" (inqata'a ilayhi) and "He felt secure with him" (itma'anna ilayhi). From this comes the word sakan (spouse/tranquility), which is the one with whom one finds tranquility. It is in the form of fa'l meaning maf'ul (the one who is rested in).
It has also been said: Affection and mercy are from Allah, while hatred is from Satan.
{And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed in that are signs for those of knowledge.}
