Tafsir of Ar-Rum 30:24

"And of His signs is that He shows you..."

Regarding {He shows you} (yurīkum), there are two perspectives:

1. The implication of a pronoun (i.e., He makes you see).
2. Treating the verb as a verbal noun (masdar).

Both are used to explain the proverb: "To hear of al-Mu‘aydi is better than to see him," and the poet’s saying: "They said, 'What do you wish for?' I said, 'To amuse myself until morning, the preference of one who is favored.'"

{In fear} (khawfan) of the lightning bolt or of the failure of rain, {and in hope} (wa-tama‘an) of the rain. It is also said: "In fear" for the traveler, and "in hope" for the resident. Both are in the accusative case as maf‘ūl lahu (causative objects).

If you ask: It is the nature of the maf‘ūl lahu that it must be an action performed by the agent of the verb being explained, yet fear and hope are not such.

I reply: There are two ways to view this:

1. The two objects are the agents in meaning, because they are the ones seeing. It is as if it were said: "He makes you see the lightning in a state of fear and hope."
2. It is based on the omission of a genitive (idafa), meaning: "the desire for fear" and "the desire for hope." The genitive was omitted, and the noun governed by it took its place.

It is also permissible for them to be states (hal), meaning: "being fearful and being hopeful." It has been recited as {yunazzilu} (He sends down) with the tashdid (emphasis).

{And of His signs is that the heaven and the earth stand by His command. Then when He calls you with a call from the earth, behold, you will emerge. And to Him belongs whoever is in the heavens and the earth; all are devoutly obedient to Him.}
