Ar-Rum: 33

"And when adversity touches the people..."

Adversity (al-ḍurr): Severe hardship, whether it be emaciation, illness, drought, or anything similar.

Mercy (al-raḥmah): Deliverance from that hardship.

The lam in "that they may disbelieve" (li-yakfurū): This is metaphorical (majāz), similar to the lam in the verse: "That he might be to them an enemy" (Al-Qaṣaṣ: 8).

"So enjoy yourselves": This is analogous to the verse: "Do what you will" (Fuṣṣilat: 40).

"But you will come to know": The consequence of your enjoyment.

Ibn Mas‘ūd read it as: "And let them enjoy themselves" (wa-li-yatamatta‘ū).

Ar-Rum: 35

"Or have We sent down to them an authority, so it speaks of that which they were associating with Him?"
