Allah is the one who created you from weakness, then made after weakness strength, then made after strength weakness and white hair. He creates what He wills, and He is the Knowing, the Competent.

Ar-Rum: 54

"Allah is the One who created you..."

It is recited as ḍa‘f (with a fatḥah on the ḍād) and ḍu‘f (with a ḍammah). Both are valid linguistic variants, though the ḍammah is stronger in recitation due to what Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated:

"I recited it before the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as ḍu‘f, and he corrected me to ḍu‘f."

His saying, "Created you from weakness," is like His saying, "Man was created of haste" (Al-Anbiya: 37). It means that the foundation of your being and the nature upon which you were molded and constructed is weakness, as in: "And man was created weak" (An-Nisa: 28).

That is: We began you in the first stage of your existence as weaklings. This is the state of childhood and growth until you reach the time of puberty and youth—which is the state of strength—until you reach middle age and full maturity. Then, you are returned to your original state, which is weakness, through old age and decrepitude.

It is also said: "From weakness" means from the drop of fluid (nuṭfah), similar to His saying: "From a despised fluid" (As-Sajdah: 8; Al-Mursalat: 20).

This oscillation between these various states, and the transformation from one form to another and one attribute to another, is the clearest proof and the most just witness to the All-Knowing, All-Powerful Creator.

"And on the Day the Hour is established, the criminals will swear that they had not remained [in the world] but an hour. Thus they were deluded."
