Do you not see that ships sail through the sea by the favor of Allah that He may show you of His signs? Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.

Al-Kashshaf

Verse range: 31:31

Open in Qurani

Luqman: (31) "Do you not see that..."

[Linguistic Notes]

  • Al-Fulk (The Ship): It is read with a damma on the lam (al-fuluk). In every noun of the pattern fa‘al, the pattern fu‘ul is permissible, just as fi‘l is permissible in fa‘l, based on the principle of substitution.
  • Bi-ni‘mati-llah (By the blessings of Allah): It is read with a sukun on the ‘ayn. In the ‘ayn of the pattern fa‘alat, the fatha, kasra, and sukun are all permissible.

[Tafsir]

  • "Do you not see": That is, [do you not see] by His benevolence and mercy?
  • "Patient": [Patient] regarding His trials.
  • "Grateful": [Grateful] for His blessings.
  • These two are the attributes of the believer; it is as if He said: "Indeed, in that are signs for every believer."

{And when waves cover them like canopies, they call upon Allah, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to the land, there are some among them who are moderate. And none rejects Our signs except every treacherous, ungrateful one.}
