Tafsir of As-Sajdah 32:15

{إِذَا ذُكِّرُوا بِهَا} Meaning: When they are admonished by them, {خَرُّوا سُجَّدًا} (they fall down in prostration) out of humility before Allah and reverence, and in gratitude for the Islam with which He has provided them.

{وَسَبَّحُوا بِحَمْدِ رَبِّهِمْ} They declare Allah free from any attribution of ugliness to Him, and they praise Him while being grateful.

{وَهُمْ لَا يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ} Unlike those who persist in arrogance as if they had not heard them. Similar to this is the Almighty’s saying: "Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it—when it is recited to them, they fall upon their faces in prostration, and they say, 'Exalted is our Lord'" (Al-Isra: 107).

{تَتَجَافَىٰ} Meaning: They rise and move away {عَنِ الْمَضَاجِعِ} (from the beds) and places of sleep, calling upon their Lord and worshipping Him due to their fear of His wrath and their hope for His mercy. They are the Mutahajjidun (those who perform the night prayer).

• From the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in its interpretation: "The servant's standing in the night."
• From Al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him): It is the Tahajjud.
• From the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): "When Allah gathers the first and the last on the Day of Resurrection, a caller will call out with a voice heard by all creatures: 'The people of the gathering will know today who is most worthy of generosity.' Then he will return and call: 'Let those whose sides used to move away from their beds stand up.' They will stand, and they are few. Then he will return and call: 'Let those who used to praise Allah in adversity and prosperity stand up.' They will stand, and they are few. Then they will all be sent to Paradise, and the rest of the people will be judged."
• From Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): There were people among the companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) who would pray between the Maghrib and Isha prayers, so this was revealed regarding them. It is also said: They are those who pray the 'Atama (Isha) prayer and do not sleep through it.

{مَّا أُخْفِيَ لَهُم} Read as passive (ukhfiya). If read as active (akhfa), the subject is Allah, the Exalted. Ma akhfa lahum, wa ma nukhfi lahum, and wa ma akhfaytu lahum—all three are in the first person, referring to Allah. Ma can mean "that which" or "what."

There is a reading: min qurrati a'yun (singular) and qurratin a'yun (plural).

The meaning: No soul—not a single one of them, neither a close angel nor a sent prophet—knows what great type of reward Allah has stored for them and hidden from all His creation. None knows it but Him, which will bring coolness to their eyes. There is no increase beyond this preparation, and no ambition beyond it.

Then He said: {جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ} (as a reward for what they used to do), thereby cutting off the ambitions of those who wish.

• From the Prophet (ﷺ): "Allah, the Exalted, says: 'I have prepared for My righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and has never crossed the heart of any human. Read if you wish: No soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes.'"
• From Al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him): They hid deeds in the world, so Allah hid for them what no eye has seen and no ear has heard.
