Has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them, [as] they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs; then do they not hear?

As-Sajdah: (26) "Has it not guided them..."

"Has it not guided them..." The waw (and) in awalam yahdi (has it not guided) is for conjunction with a suppressed element of the same type as the conjoined element. The pronoun in lahum (to them) refers to the people of Mecca.

It is recited with both the nun (nahdi - We guide) and the ya (yahdi - He guides). The subject of the verb is what is indicated by kam ahlakna (how many We have destroyed), because kam cannot function as a subject (one does not say: "How many men came to me"). The estimation is: "Has the abundance of Our destruction of the generations not guided them?" Or, the statement is taken as it is, with its content and meaning, similar to your saying: "There is no god but God protects blood and wealth." It is also possible that it contains a pronoun referring to God, indicated by the reading with the nun.

"...the generations..." Meaning ‘Ad, Thamud, and the people of Lot.

"...[while] they walk in their dwellings..." Meaning the people of Mecca; they pass by their homes and lands during their trade journeys. It is also recited as yamashshuna (they walk about) with the shaddah (emphasis).

(27) "Have they not seen that We drive the water to the barren land, then We bring forth thereby crops from which their livestock and themselves eat? Do they not then see?"
