Al-Aḥzāb: 15

"And they had already made a covenant with Allah..."

Ibn Abbas said: They made a covenant with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on the night of al-ʿAqabah that they would protect him just as they protect themselves.

It is also said: They were a group who missed the Battle of Badr, so they said, "If Allah allows us to witness a battle, we will surely fight."

Muhammad ibn Isḥāq said: They made a covenant on the day of Uhud that they would not flee.

"Accountable" (masʾūlā): Meaning requested and required to be fulfilled.

"Flight will not benefit you": From that which must inevitably befall you, whether by natural death or by being killed. Even if flight were to benefit you for a moment, granting you a delay, that enjoyment would be nothing but a short time.

It is narrated from some of the Marwānids: That he passed by a leaning wall and hurried past it. This verse was recited to him, and he replied, "It is that 'little' [time] that we seek."

"Say, 'Who is it that can protect you from Allah if He intends for you an ill or intends for you a mercy?' And they will not find for themselves besides Allah any protector or any helper."
