Al-Aḥzāb: 22

"And when the believers saw..."

God had promised them that they would be shaken until they sought His aid and victory, as in His saying: "Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while such [trial] has not yet come to you as it came to those who passed on before you?" (Al-Baqarah: 214).

So, when the Confederates (al-Aḥzāb) arrived, and the believers were distressed, agitated, and struck with intense terror, they said: "This is what God and His Messenger promised us," and they were certain of Paradise and victory.

It is narrated from Ibn Abbas (may God be pleased with them both) that he said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to his companions: "The Confederates are marching toward you in nine or ten [days]," meaning: at the end of nine or ten nights. When they saw them approaching at the appointed time, they said that [the aforementioned statement].

This is a reference to the calamity or the trial, [which they met with] "faith" in God and His promises, and "submission" to His decrees and ordainments.

{ Among the believers are men true to what they promised God. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [by death], and among them is he who awaits, and they have not altered [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration. That God may reward the truthful for their truthfulness and punish the hypocrites if He wills or accept their repentance. Indeed, God is ever Forgiving and Merciful. And God repelled those who disbelieved, in their rage, not having obtained any good. And sufficient was God for the believers in battle, and ever is God Powerful and Exalted in Might. And He brought down those who supported them among the People of the Scripture from their fortresses and cast terror into their hearts [so that] a party you killed, and you took captive a party. And He caused you to inherit their land and their homes and their wealth and a land which you had not trodden. And ever is God, over all things, competent. }
