Al-Aḥzāb: 35 **"Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women..."**

It is narrated: (887) That the wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "O Messenger of Allah, Allah has mentioned men in the Quran with goodness, is there no goodness in us that we should be mentioned?" They feared that their obedience would not be accepted. It is also said that the one who asked was Umm Salama.

And it is narrated: (888) That when the verses concerning the wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) were revealed, the Muslim women said: "Has nothing been revealed concerning us?" Then this verse was revealed.

  • The Muslim (al-muslim): The one who enters into peace after war, the submissive one who does not resist, or the one who entrusts his affair to Allah and relies upon Him—the one who has submitted his face to Allah.
  • The Believer (al-muʾmin): The one who affirms belief in Allah, His Messenger, and all that is required to be believed.
  • The Devout (al-qānit): The one who performs obedience and remains constant in it.
  • The Truthful (al-ṣādiq): The one who is truthful in his intention, his speech, and his deeds.
  • The Patient (al-ṣābir): The one who is patient in performing acts of obedience and patient in refraining from acts of disobedience.
  • The Humble (al-khāshiʿ): The one who is humble before Allah in his heart and his limbs. It is said: He is the one who, when he prays, does not know who is to his right or his left.
  • The Charitable (al-mutaṣaddiq): The one who pays the zakat on his wealth and does not neglect voluntary acts of charity. It is said: Whoever gives a dirham in charity each week is among the charitable; and whoever fasts the "white days" (13th, 14th, 15th) of each month is among the fasting ones.
  • The one who remembers Allah often (al-dhākirīn Allāh kathīran): The one who is rarely without the remembrance of Allah in his heart, his tongue, or both. Reciting the Quran and engaging in the pursuit of knowledge are forms of remembrance. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: (889) "Whoever wakes from his sleep and wakes his wife, and they both pray two rak'ahs together, they are recorded among the men and women who remember Allah often."

The meaning is: "And the female keepers of their chastity and the female rememberers," but it was omitted because the context makes it clear.

If you ask: What is the difference between the two types of conjunctions—the conjunction of females to males, and the conjunction of the pairs to the pairs? I say: The first conjunction is like the saying of the Exalted: "Widows and virgins" (Al-Taḥrīm: 5), in that they are two different categories; when they share in a ruling, it is necessary to place the conjunction between them. As for the second conjunction, it is the conjunction of an attribute to an attribute using the particle of inclusion (wa). It is as if the meaning is: "Indeed, those who combine these acts of obedience—men and women—Allah has prepared for them..."

"It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error."
