Al-Ahzab: 38–39

{God had ordained for him} He allotted it to him and made it obligatory, derived from the saying: "He ordained for so-and-so such-and-such in the register." From this comes the furud (stipends) of the soldiers for their provisions.

{The way of God} A noun placed in the position of the verbal noun (masdar), as when they say "dust" or "stones" [as emphatic objects]. It serves to emphasize His saying: {There was no constraint upon the Prophet}. It is as if it were said: God established this as a way among the past prophets, which is that no constraint is placed upon them in undertaking what He has permitted and made expansive for them regarding marriage and other matters. They had free women and concubines under them; David (peace be upon him) had one hundred wives and three hundred concubines, and Solomon (peace be upon him) had three hundred wives and seven hundred concubines.

{Among those who have passed away} Among the prophets who have gone before.

{Who convey} This admits several grammatical possibilities:

  • Genitive (Jarr): As an adjective for the prophets.
  • Nominative (Raf‘) or Accusative (Nasb): As a form of praise, meaning "they are the ones who convey," or "I mean those who convey."
  • It has been recited as: "The message of God."

{A determined measure} A decreed judgment and an irrevocable ruling. Describing the prophets as fearing none but God is an allusion following the explicit statement in His saying: {And you feared the people, while God is more worthy that you fear Him} (Al-Ahzab: 37).

{A Reckoner} Sufficient against all fears, or One who holds account for the small and the great; therefore, the true fear must be of One such as He.

{Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men, but he is the Messenger of God and the Seal of the Prophets. And God is, of all things, Knowing.}
