Al-Aḥzāb: 48

{And do not obey the disbelievers} The meaning is: persistence and steadfastness upon what you were already upon. Or, it is an incitement.

{And ignore their harm} The genitive construction (iḍāfah) can be attributed to either the doer or the recipient. It means:

  1. Refrain from harming them with injury or killing; take them by their outward appearance, and leave their inner state to God.
  2. Or: Ignore the harm they inflict upon you and do not retaliate against them until you are commanded to do so.

Ibn Abbas (may God be pleased with them both) said: This is abrogated by the Verse of the Sword.

{And rely upon God} For He is sufficient for you against them, and He is sufficient as a Trustee.

A note on the structure: God described the Prophet (ﷺ) with five attributes, and addressed each with a corresponding command:

  1. "A Witness" is met with: “And give good tidings to the believers,” because he will be a witness over his nation, and they will be witnesses over all other nations—this is the great bounty.
  2. "A Bearer of Good Tidings" is met with: “And do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites,” because if he turns away from them, he turns his full attention toward the believers, which is appropriate for one who brings good tidings.
  3. "A Warner" is met with: “And ignore their harm,” because if he leaves their harm for the present—and harm must inevitably be met with punishment, whether sooner or later—they are being warned of the future.
  4. "One who invites to God by His permission" is met with: “And rely upon God,” because whoever relies upon God, He makes every difficulty easy for him.
  5. "An Illuminating Lamp" is met with: “And sufficient is God as a Trustee,” because whoever God has illuminated as a proof for all His creation is worthy of being sufficient in God alone, independent of all His creation.

Al-Aḥzāb: 49

{O you who have believed, when you marry believing women and then divorce them before you have touched them, then there is not for you any waiting period to count against them. So provide for them and release them in a gracious manner.}
