Surah Saba: (27) Say, "Show me those..."

If you ask: What is the meaning of His saying, "Show me," when He already sees them and knows them?

I say: He intended by that to show them the grave error in associating partners with Allah, and to set up a comparison before their eyes between Him and their idols, so that He might reveal to them the impossibility of comparing anything to Him or associating anything with Him.

"Nay" (Kalla): This is a rebuke to them regarding their doctrine, after He had rendered it worthless by invalidating the comparison—just as Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fie upon you and upon that which you worship instead of Allah" (Al-Anbiya: 67), after he had refuted them with arguments.

He has alerted them to the enormity of their error, even if they could not grasp its true magnitude, by His saying: "He is Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise." It is as if He said: "Where are those you associated as partners with Him regarding these attributes?"

The pronoun "He" (Huwa) refers back to Allah alone, or it is the "pronoun of the state" (damir al-sha'n), as in His saying: "Say, 'He is Allah, [who is] One'" (Al-Ikhlas: 1).

(28) And We have not sent you except comprehensively to mankind as a bringer of good tidings and a warner. But most of the people do not know.
