Surah Saba: 43

"And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, they say, 'This is not but a man who wishes to avert you from that which your fathers were worshipping.' And they say, 'This is not but a lie invented.' And those who disbelieve say of the truth when it has come to them, 'This is not but obvious magic.'"

Exegesis:

The first reference is to the Prophet (ﷺ). The second is to the Qur’an. The third is to the Truth (al-haqq), which encompasses the entire matter of Prophethood and the religion of Islam as it truly is.

In the phrase "And those who disbelieve say," rather than simply saying "And they say," and in the phrase "of the truth when it has come to them," there is a profound indication. The two definite articles (al-) point specifically to the speakers and the subject matter. Furthermore, the use of lam (in lamma—"when") signifies an immediate, impulsive rejection.

All of this serves as evidence that these words emanated from a state of immense denial and intense rage. It expresses a profound sense of astonishment at their behavior, as if the text were saying: "Those rebellious disbelievers, in their audacity toward Allah and their stubborn contention against such a luminous truth, declared—even before they had truly tasted it—'This is nothing but obvious magic.'"

They issued a definitive judgment that it was magic, and then further affirmed that it was so manifest and apparent that any rational person who contemplated it would label it as magic.

"And We had not given them any scriptures which they could study, and We had not sent to them before you any warner. And those before them denied, and they have not attained a tenth of what We had given them. But they denied My messengers, so how [terrible] was My reproach!"
