Verse range: 35:19-23
{The blind and the seeing} This is a parable for the disbeliever and the believer, just as the two seas were struck as a parable for them, or for the idol and Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He).
{The darkness and the light, the shade and the heat} These are two parables for the truth and falsehood, and what they lead to in terms of reward and punishment.
{The living and the dead} A parable for those who have entered into Islam and those who have not, persisting in disbelief.
{Al-Harur (the heat)} It is the scorching wind (al-samum). However, al-samum occurs during the day, while al-harur occurs by night and day. It has also been said: specifically by night.
If you ask: What is the nature of the "la" (no/not) conjoined with the conjunction "wa" (and)? I say: When the "wa" occurs in a negative context, it is conjoined with it to emphasize the meaning of negation.
If you ask: Is there a difference between these "wa"s? I say: Some of them join an even number to an even number, and some join an odd number to an odd number.
{Indeed, Allah causes whom He wills to hear} Meaning: He has known who will enter Islam and who will not. Thus, He guides the one whom He knows guidance will benefit, and He abandons the one whom He knows it will not benefit. As for you, their state is hidden from you, which is why you are eager and strive intensely for the Islam of a people who have been abandoned. Your likeness in this is like one who wishes to make the buried hear and warn them, and that is a path that cannot be taken.
{You are not but a warner} Meaning: You have no duty other than to convey and warn. If the one being warned is among those who hear the warning, it benefits him; if he is among those who persist in disbelief, then it is not upon you.
It is also possible that "Indeed, Allah causes whom He wills to hear" means He is capable of guiding those whose hearts are sealed by way of compulsion and force, and others by way of guidance and success. As for you, you have no recourse regarding those whose hearts are sealed, for they are in the position of the dead.
{Indeed, We have sent you with the truth as a bringer of good tidings and a warner. And there was no nation but that there had passed within it a warner.}
