Tafsir
Verse range: 35:24
{بالحق} (With the truth): It is a state (ḥāl) referring to one of the two pronouns [in arsalnāka], meaning: "as one who is truthful" or "as those who are truthful." Alternatively, it is an adjective for the verbal noun (maṣdar), meaning: "a sending accompanied by truth." Or, it is connected to "bringer of glad tidings" and "warner," meaning: "a bringer of glad tidings of the true promise, and a warner of the true threat."
{وأمة} (And a community): A large group. God Almighty said: "He found upon it a community (ummah) of people." It is said of the people of every era: "a community." In the definitions of the theologians (mutakallimūn), the "community" are those who believe in the Messenger (peace be upon him), not those to whom he was sent, and they are the ones whose consensus (ijmāʿ) is considered. The intended meaning here is: the people of the era.
If you ask: How many communities existed in the interval (fatrah) between Jesus and Muhammad (peace be upon them both), and were they not devoid of a warner? I say: As long as the traces of the warning remained, they were not devoid of a warner until they were effaced. When the traces of Jesus’ warning were effaced, God sent Muhammad (peace be upon him).
If you ask: Why did He suffice with mentioning the "warner" at the end of the verse after mentioning both [the bringer of glad tidings and the warner]? I say: Since warning is inevitably accompanied by glad tidings, mentioning the former implies the latter, especially since the verse had already included the mention of both.
(And if they deny you, then those before them also denied; their messengers came to them with clear proofs, and with the scriptures, and with the enlightening book. Then I seized those who disbelieved, and how [terrible] was My reproach!)
