Tafsir
Verse range: 36:18
As God recounted regarding the Copts: {But if a misfortune befalls them, they take it as an evil omen from Moses and those with him} (Al-A'raf: 131). And regarding the polytheists of Mecca: {And if a misfortune befalls them, they say, "This is from you"} (An-Nisa: 78). It is said that rain was withheld from them, so they said that. Qatada said: "If something happens to us, it is because of you."
It is also recited as a-in dhukkirtum (with an interrogative hamza and a conditional particle), and a-in (with an alif between them), meaning: "Do you take omens if you are reminded?"
It is also recited as a-an dhukkirtum (with an interrogative hamza and the particle an), meaning: "Did you take omens because you were reminded?"
It is also recited as an and in without an interrogative, for the purpose of informing, meaning: "You took omens because you were reminded," or "If you are reminded, you take omens."
It is also recited as ayna dhukkirtum (lightened), meaning: "Your evil omen is with you wherever you are mentioned." If a place is made ominous by their mention, then their actual presence in it is even more ominous.
And there came from the farthest end of the city a man, running. He said, "O my people, follow the messengers. Follow those who do not ask of you any payment, and they are [rightly] guided. And why should I not worship He who created me and to whom you will be returned? Should I take other than Him deities? If the Most Merciful intends for me some adversity, their intercession will not avail me at all, nor can they save me. Indeed, I would then be in manifest error. Indeed, I have believed in your Lord, so listen to me."
