{Fear what is before you and what is behind you}

It is like the saying of the Almighty: {Have they not seen what is before them and what is behind them of the heaven and the earth?} (Saba: 9).

  • Mujahid said: It means the sins you have committed and those you will commit.
  • Qatadah said: It means the events that have passed before you—meaning the examples of the events with which nations who denied their prophets were afflicted—and what is behind you regarding the matter of the Hour.

{That you may receive mercy} So that you may be in a state of hope for the mercy of God.

The structure of the verse: The response to "When" (idha) is omitted, but it is indicated by His saying: {except that they were turning away from it}. It is as if He said: "And when it was said to them, 'Fear,' they turned away." Then He said: "And their habit is turning away at every sign and admonition."

{And when it is said to them, "Spend from that which God has provided for you," those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Should we feed one whom, if God had willed, He would have fed? You are not but in clear error."}
