And they will not be able [to give] any instruction, nor to their people can they return.
Tafsir
Verse range: 36:48-50
"And they say, 'When will this [promise] be...'"
It is recited: (wa-hum yakhiṣṣimūn) by assimilating the tāʾ into the ṣād, with the khāʾ both opened (fatḥa) and broken (kasra), and by following the yāʾ with the khāʾ in the kasra. It is also read as (yakhtaṣimūn) according to the original root, and (yakhiṣmūn), derived from khaṣamahu (to defeat in an argument).
The meaning is: It will take them by surprise while they are in a state of security and heedlessness, not letting it cross their minds, as they are preoccupied with their disputes in their marketplaces, their dealings, and all other matters in which they argue and quarrel.
The meaning of yakhiṣṣimūn is: they are disputing with one another. It is also said: It takes them while they are, in their own estimation, arguing about the proof that they will not be resurrected.
"So they will not be able to make a bequest" They will not be able to carry out any of their affairs, nor will they be able to return to their homes and families. Rather, they will die exactly where the blast surprises them.
"And the Horn will be blown, and at once they will come forth from their graves to their Lord, rushing. They will say, 'O woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place? This is what the Most Merciful had promised, and the messengers spoke the truth.'"
