{And We certainly bestowed favor upon...}

{From the great distress} Meaning: from drowning, or from the authority of Pharaoh and his people and their oppression.

{And We saved them} The pronoun refers to both of them and their people, as stated in the verse: {And We saved them and their people}.

{The clear Book} Meaning: the one that is eloquent in its clarity, which is the Torah, as He said: {Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which is guidance and light} (Al-Ma'idah: 44).

Regarding those who permit the possibility that the Torah was [originally] in Arabic, they derive it from the phrase "rawā al-zand" (the striking of the fire-stick), making it a fawʿala form, with the tāʾ being a substitute for a wāw.

{The straight path} The path of the people of Islam, which is the path of those upon whom Allah has bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [His] anger or of those who are astray.

{And indeed, Elias was among the messengers. When he said to his people, "Will you not fear Allah? Do you call upon Ba'l and leave the best of creators? Allah is your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers." But they denied him, so indeed, they will be brought [for punishment], except the chosen servants of Allah. And We left for him [favorable mention] among the later generations: "Peace upon Elias." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.}
