"And indeed, Elias was among the messengers."
It is read as Ilyās with a kasra on the hamza, and Alyās as a connective form. It is said that he is the Prophet Idris. Ibn Mas‘ūd read: "And indeed, Idris," in place of Elias. It is also read as Idrās. It is said he is Elias ibn Yasin, a descendant of Aaron, the brother of Moses.
"Do you call upon Ba‘l?" Meaning: Do you worship Ba‘l? It is a proper name for an idol they possessed, like Manāt and Hubal. It is said it was made of gold, twenty cubits tall, with four faces. They were seduced by it and venerated it to the point that they assigned four hundred custodians to it, whom they treated as its prophets. The Devil would enter the hollow of Ba‘l and speak the laws of misguidance, which the custodians would memorize and teach to the people. These were the people of Ba‘lbak in the Levant, and their city was named after it. It is also said that Ba‘l means "lord" in the dialect of Yemen; one says, "Who is the ba‘l of this house?" meaning, who is its lord? The meaning is: Do you worship some lords and abandon the worship of Allah?
"Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers." It is read in the nominative case (Allāhu) as an initial subject, and in the accusative case (Allāha) as an appositive. Hamza would read it in the accusative when continuing the recitation and in the nominative when pausing.
It is read as ‘alā al-Yāsīn, Idrīsīn, Idrāsīn, and Idrāsīn, as these are dialectal variations of Elias and Idris. Perhaps the addition of the ya and nun in Syriac carries a specific meaning. It is also read as ‘alā Āl-Yāsīn (the family of Yasin) as a connective, intending Elias and his people, similar to how they say "the Khubaybūn" or "the Muhallabūn."
If you ask: Why not interpret al-Yāsīn in this way [as a plural] and its counterparts? I say: If it were a plural, it would be defined with the definite article al-. As for those who read ‘alā Āl-Yāsīn, it is based on the understanding that Yasin is the name of Elias’s father, to whom the family (āl) is attributed.
"And indeed, Lot was among the messengers. When We saved him and his family, all of them, except an old woman among those who remained behind. Then We destroyed the others. And indeed, you pass by them in the morning and at night. Will you not then use your reason?"
