Tafsir of As-Saffat 37:22

{Gather} This is God’s address to the angels, or the address of some of them to others.

{And their counterparts} According to the Prophet (peace be upon him), these are their peers and likes among the sinners: the adulterers with the adulterers, and the thieves with the thieves. It is also said: their companions from among the devils. It is also said: their wives who followed their religion.

{And guide them} Make known to them the path to the Fire so that they may traverse it. This is a mockery of them and a rebuke for their inability to help one another, after they had been, in the worldly life, supportive and helpful to each other.

{Nay, they are this day submissive} They have surrendered one another and abandoned each other out of helplessness. Every one of them is submissive, not victorious. It is also recited: la tatanasaron (you will not help one another) and la tanasaron (with assimilation).

{And they will turn to one another, questioning. They will say, "Indeed, you used to come to us from the right." They will say, "Nay, you yourselves were not believers. And we had no authority over you, but you were a transgressing people. So the word of our Lord has come into effect against us; indeed, we will taste [the punishment]. And we led you astray; indeed, we were astray." So indeed, they will be, that Day, partners in the punishment. Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals. Indeed they were, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allah," being arrogant.}
