Tafsir of As-Saffat 37:58

Surah As-Saffat 37:58

ﱦ ﱧ ﱨ

Then, are we not to die

Tafsir

Al-Kashshaf

Verse range: 37:58

Open in Qurani

As-Saffat: (58) "Are we then not to die?"

The omitted antecedent: The element to which the fa (in afama) is conjoined is omitted. The meaning is: "Are we to be immortal and in bliss, so that we shall not die, nor be punished?"

Variant reading: It has been recited as bi-ma'itīn (meaning: "Are we to be two hundred?").

The state of the believers: This is the condition of the believers and their description, and what God has decreed for them—based on His knowledge of their deeds—is that they shall not taste any death other than the first one. This is in contrast to the disbelievers, who wish for death every hour.

It was said to one of the sages: "What is worse than death?" He replied: "That in which one wishes for death."

{ Indeed, this is the great attainment. For the like of this let the workers work. }
