Tafsir
Verse range: 37:95-96
{And Allah created you and what you do} Meaning: He created you and He created what you make, namely the idols. This is like His saying: {Nay, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, He who originated them} (Al-Anbiya: 56), meaning He originated the idols.
If you ask: How can one thing be created by Allah and yet made by them, given that He applied both "creation" and "their making" to it?
I say: This is like saying, "The carpenter made the door and the chair," and "The goldsmith made the bracelet and the anklet." The intent is the making of the shapes and forms of these things, not their substances. The idols are both substances and shapes; Allah is the Creator of their substances, while the ones who shape them are those who form them by carving and removing parts until the desired shape is achieved.
If you ask: What prevents "ma" (what) from being a verbal particle (masdariyyah) rather than a relative pronoun (mawsulah), such that the meaning becomes "Allah created you and your actions," as the Determinists (Mujbirah) claim?
I say: The most immediate refutation of this—beyond its invalidity according to the proofs of reason and the Book—is that the meaning of the verse clearly rejects it. The context is that Allah, the Almighty, is arguing against them that both the worshiper and the worshipped are creations of Allah. How, then, can a created being worship another created being? Especially since the worshiper is the one who crafted the form and shape of the worshipped; without him, it could not have shaped or formed itself. If you were to say, "Allah created you and created your actions," there would be no argument against them, and your speech would lack coherence.
Furthermore, the phrase {what you do} is an interpretation of His saying {what you carve}. The "ma" in {what you carve} is a relative pronoun, about which there is no dispute. Therefore, one should not deviate from its counterpart unless one is a forced, biased partisan, lacking insight into the science of rhetoric (bayan) and lacking understanding of the Quranic structure.
If you ask: I will treat it as a relative pronoun so that I am not bound by your objection, and I will intend by it: "and what you do of your actions."
I say: Rather, both obligations remain upon your neck, and only submission to the truth can release you from them. Even if you treat it as a relative pronoun, by intending "actions" by it, you fail to argue against the polytheists, just as you did when you treated it as a verbal particle. Moreover, you would be severing the connection between "what you do" and "what you carve," creating a contradiction between the two intended meanings. You would be adding to "what you carve" the physical entities (the idols), while "what you do" would refer to the abstract actions. This breaks the structure and fragments it, just as it does when you treat it as a verbal particle.
