Verse 16

"And they said, 'Our Lord, hasten for us our qitt...'"

The Qitt: It is a portion of a thing, because it is a piece cut from it, derived from the verb qattahu (he cut it). It is said of a document of reward: a qatt, because it is a piece of parchment.

Both meanings have been used to interpret the Almighty’s saying: "Hasten for us our qitt," meaning:

  1. Our share of the punishment which You have promised, similar to His saying: "And they hasten you for the punishment" (Al-Hajj: 47).
  2. It is said: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) mentioned Allah’s promise of Paradise to the believers, they said mockingly: "Hasten for us our share of it."
  3. Or: "Hasten for us the record of our deeds so that we may look into it."

Verse 17

"Be patient over what they say and remember Our servant David, the possessor of strength; indeed, he was one who repeatedly turned back [to Allah]."

Verse 18

"Indeed, We subjected the mountains to exalt [Allah] with him in the evening and the sunrise."

Verse 19

"And the birds, assembled; all were to Him, repeatedly turning back."

Verse 20

"And We strengthened his kingdom and gave him wisdom and discernment in speech."
