[Surah Ṣād: 29] **"A Book We have revealed to you..."**

It is recited: (mubārakan) [blessed] and li-yattadabbarū [that they may reflect] according to the original form; and li-taddabbarū [that you all may reflect] according to the second-person address.

"And that they may reflect upon its verses": This means contemplating them and engaging in the deep reflection that leads to knowing the correct interpretations and excellent meanings that lie beneath their outward expression. For whoever is content only with the outward appearance of what is recited will not gain much benefit from it. His likeness is that of a man who possesses a milk-yielding camel but does not milk it, or a fertile mare but does not breed it.

Al-Hasan said: "Slaves and children have recited this Quran who have no knowledge of its interpretation. They memorized its letters but neglected its boundaries (laws), to the point that one of them says: 'By Allah, I have recited the Quran and did not drop a single letter from it,' while by Allah, he has dropped all of it! One sees no effect of the Quran upon his character or his deeds. By Allah, it is not about memorizing its letters while wasting its boundaries. By Allah, these are not the wise, nor are they the righteous. May Allah not increase the likes of them among the people."

O Allah, make us among the learned who reflect, and protect us from the arrogant who merely recite.

"And We bestowed upon David, Solomon. An excellent servant! Indeed, he was one who frequently turned back [to Allah]. When there were displayed before him in the afternoon the ṣāfināt (horses standing on three legs) and the jiyād (swift ones). He said, 'Indeed, I have preferred the love of good [things] over the remembrance of my Lord, until [the sun] disappeared behind the veil [of darkness]. Return them to me.' Then he began striking [their] legs and necks."
